Rundown and recent by Annemaart

Sadly, I only got to see the east cemetery and not the west one, since the tour that day was fully booked. I had a nice time visiting the east side though. What I loved about this cemetary is that it was very quiet and a little run down. In the sense that there was poison ivy growing on everything, there were only two or three real good paths and the rest were muddy trakcs more than anything.

The grave of Karl Max is, I’m sorry to say, very ugly, his big face standing out like a pimple on pretty skin. Funny thing I found out when looking closer at the pictures I took is that there is a stella artois bottle cap stuck in his eye. So now the pour bloke can’t help but look at one of the many signs of capatalism.

I do want to return some day and see the west cemetary too. My short trip to london was a success, so I’m sure that won’t be all that long from now.

This week! by Annemaart

I’m going to London at the end of this week and Highgate is my main destination. Hope to have some decent weather and that there’s stills ome leaves on the trees there. Winter is moving up fast.

Extremely beautiful, the West cemetery might be the most impressive, but you can’t get in on your own. You have to wait for the tour (which is usually fully booked, so reserve your places on time) or visit the East cemetery on the opposite side of the road. Less extravagant, the East side does have more famous people buried there (like Karl Marx), but it’s equally as pretty as the West side. Better yet, you’re free to wander about and really explore the place. Admission isn’t free though, but at only 2 pounds per person it’s not exactly expensive either.
