Mindblowing scenery and seabirds by murdo27

We got there with Sea Harris ( http://www.seaharris.co.uk )

They run daily trips to St Kilda (Weather Permitting) from Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris.

Boat is very comfortable and fast, and gives you enough time on Main Island of Hirta to see the historical buildings. If you’re fit enough you have plenty time to climb the hills, get close to the edge of these awesome sea cliffs and get some spectacular photos.

Highlight is when Seumas takes the boat out to boreray and round the sea stacs… i don’t think anybody would be disappointed with this part.

amazing history by Gemma

I read a book about this place. It was about the people that lived in this harsh enviroment. How they lived and what they ate, their customs and traditions. It was so interesting and I’ve been wanting to visit ever since.

I’d love to join one of the work parties that visit with the National Trust – but the problem is that I hate ferry rides. It’s a phobia and I think the journey here is meant to be pretty nasty. So … I think I’m going to have to either work on that or hitch a ride with the RAF.

evacuated in 1930 by guytavor

There are no permanent residents on St Kilda today. However, the main island of Hirta is occupied all year round by the people who work on the military base, now almost entirely a civilian workforce. The National Trust for Scotland/Scottish Natural Heritage wardens are resident on the island from April to September every year. National Trust for Scotland work parties visit the islands during the summer months, and many researchers spend time there studying all aspects of the natural and cultural history.
