Launch Pad 34

The remaining structures of Pad 34, site of Apollo 1 where the three astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee, lost their lives on January 27, 1967, when a fire swept through their capsule. Also the site of the successful launch of Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo flight.

After Pad 34’s steel support structures were removed because of deterioration, the remaining concrete supports where designated as “Abandoned in Place” indicating that they will be left forever; A silent memorial to the individuals who participated in man’s first step towards the moon.
