William Shakespeare Statue

Although it’s a bust of Shakespeare, it’s actually a monument to his friends Henry Condell and John Heminge. Until I read Bill Bryson’s book on Shakespeare (really fascinating and very readable), I never appreciated the importance of the First Folio of Shakespeare’s works which his 2 friends collated.

Without the First Folio, Shakespeare’s output could have easily disappeared into oblivion, along with the thousands of other 16th century play manuscripts which did not survive.

English Lit lessons could have been so different!
