Stewart Island aka: Rakiura

Went there last weekend with my wife for our third honeymoon in four months and thoroughly enjoyed it though we were very lucky with the weather… We were told that it is rainy 255 days of the year..! One word of warning by one of the 300 locals was that you should not use traditional magnetic compasses because these get distorted! I’m keen to do some tramping there and fishing off the coast, maybe this summer or otherwise in winter time. Keen to rough it too.

Some years later I would be keen to take the sea kayak for a spin around the island.

I want to go back and do that one hard-out track, see if I can’t catch a glimpse of the Southern Lights. The one time I went there, I spent the week mostly drunk with my friends.

I want to visit here as part of my campaign to “stick my Toe” in the ocean at the most southern points of each of the world’s major landmasses….So Far I’ve been to Lands End in Tasmania (South of Cockle Creek) and Cape Agulas in South Africa

Not a good tourist destination, but if you enjoy tramping (hiking) and waist-deep mud, you can’t do much better than Stewart Island. It’s out there.
