A definite must see in Istanbul by Janna72

I was totally freaked out in the Grand Bazaar by all the pushy salesmen! If you’re a girl travelling solo, try to find someone to go with.

On the other hand, the Spice Market was an absolute delight and I went back three times!

Delicious food, beautiful crafts and the guys are much more laidback and polite.

I took some food with me on my trip to Gallipoli and bought more packaged treats as presents to take home.

In two buildings….besides spices, there’s a repetition of a few shops from the grand bazaar – souvenirs etc. Most stores looked the same from a glance….most sell slightly dried dates. I asked what was so special about a spice market if we know what spices are out there – they say the spice mixes are the specialty. But watch out! for the price per kilogram. One store had a kebab mix for $140/kg. Easy to forget this means $7 for a small bag if you have no sense of weight. And careful the spices inside cost much higher than what’s at the storefront. Socializing with the store clerks always helps to “get to know” their products – if you have the time.
