Worth visiting!
A rumor about this place
Benicia is full of history … and ghosts. More than one has rumored ghosts living at the famous Union Hotel on the main drag, First Street and a place I used to work at, which was at that time the Flying Dutchman but has since changed hands many times (very last building on the right/west side of First Street heading towards the Carquinez Straits), has had two ghosts that I’m aware of. One is a rather odd man who walks a bit strangely, wears a long coat which some think is a trench coat while others venture a guess it’s a fisher’s coat. The other is a woman which many believe was a prostitute (the majority of First Street were brothels up until the late 50’s, early 60’s according to the former Chief of Police who owned the Benicia-Vallejo Stagecoach that ran in the late 70’s early 80’s). Do a search for ghosts in Benicia as there are many websites with similar tales worth investigating. Even if you’re not a believer, the town has much to offer, especially it’s rich history and it’s highly touted “antique capital of the world” status (which Martinez continously attempts to overthrow but has never been successful in doing so).
