A giant and a witch

This is a perfect village but its highlight is slightly south on the road, a view of the great sea stacks north of the island of Eysturoy.

There is a legend about these stacks. The giants of Iceland wanted the Faroes so they sent Risin, a witch and Killingin, a giant to bring them back.

This pair made a right pig’s ear of the job, splitting one mountain but not getting the islands a foot nearer to Iceland.

Then, to compound their inefficiency, they let themselves be caught out by the dawn. You can guess the rest. Everybody knows that the penalty for giants and witches caught by the dawn is to be turned into stacks – and it must be true because you can see them there.
