Green Island was great. I really liked it a lot. It was nice to get out of the city and I especially love being near the water – it’s therapy for my soul! It’s east to explore the island by scooter and there are loads of scenic spots to visit. In fact, you could explore the island in a day if you wanted to. There are three prisons on the island and one is open to the public. These prisons were used to hold Taiwan’s political prisoners during the martial-law era. Some prisoners spent more than 30 years there before being released! There are also a couple of diving companies to take you snorkelling, although I was a little uneasy about the cleanliness of the dive suits. We definately enjoyed the BBQ restaurants, especially after a long day out in the fresh air. I wish we could’ve spent a little more time there. It’s incredibly lush and beautiful. I admit, there wasn’t a lot to do, but it was a lot of fun and I’m sure we could’ve found something to occupy us for another couple of days.

Another beautiful picture of Green Island. It’s cheap and easy to get there.

Why I want to go to this place
Woo-hoo! I’m on my way to Green Island tomorrow. I’m pretty excited as this will be my first trip by train to southern Taiwan before boarding a boat to Green Island. I’ve heard the hot springs are amazing and I’m anxious to try them out.

Really green
Went there last summer, and it was worth the trip (and seasickness). With a motorcyle, you can circle the island’s scenic places—miraculous natural rock formations, clear blue oceans, breathktaking sunset/sunrise, lush green forests on steep slopes and rockfaces, seaside hotspring, and abundant wildlife on land and under water!
Away from all this beauty is also a dark side: a prison-turned-human rights-museum dedicated to political prisoners during Taiwan's totalitarian era.

Get away from it all!
This is a fun spot for a few days off the East Coast of Taipei.
Although it’s known mostly for it’s large Pennitentary, it also has some lovely scenic areas
Best of all, you can’t miss the Seawater hot springs! We happened to go during a full moon, so we were able to soak in hot springs while watching the moonlight on the ocean waves. Unforgettable.
We stayed in a small hostel and rented a scooter and circled the island a few times during our stay.
Highly recommend it!
