I was driving from New Orleans up to Chicago and just as I crossed into Missouri, I heard an announcement on the radio for the Sikeston Bootheel Rodeo. I didn’t think I’d be able to find a room or tickets on short notice, but I lucked upon a motel which still had a vacancy and tickets were not hard to come by. The rodeo itself was fun, especially the bull riding, but the real treat came at the end when a huge 16-wheeler rolled out into the arena and the trailer unfolded into a stage. I got to see a concert as part of the admission, and the performer was none other than Ronnie Milsap, one of my favs at the time. If only for the rodeo, I recommend Sikeston (which the locals pronounce “Sakston”).

My family attended a couple rodeos here when I was young. It was truly an entertaining experience, and the first year we felt very out of place wearing sneakers and sandals instead of cowboy boots. It was a fun time nonetheless.

Home of Lambert’s Cafe where they throw a roll atcha if you just let’em know you want one and carry around buckets of sweet mac and tomatoes, beans, fried potaoes and just dip’em out on your plate if you want some. I’ve eaten there for 50 years, but I did START as a kid. Home of the Sikeston Bulldogs, Kirby’s Hamburger and Cab Stand, Hart’s Bread, Houchins Donuts, The Bootheel Rodeo and my sis. They have a lot more things to do now than they did when I lived there, but I am hoping to go back in September when my niece and niece-in-law both have babies.
