Renting a old bicicle and wondering around can provide a fantastic day among the old temples and huge rocks. Dont forget to visit and walk along the river.

You won’t believe what you’re seeing when visiting Hampi. Hampi was the former capital of a great Hindu empire in the Deccan plateau. In its heydey it was a fairytale city with many temples, palaces and the most beautiful of mansions. The city was robbed of all its strength and splendor in 1565 AD when the then ruler Rama Raya was defeated and killed by a confederation of Mughal kings. The remains of the capital, its many temples are one of the most impressive sights in Karnataka State.

Hampi can be described in two words: Time Travel.
It transports you back in time to an era of prosperity, pinnacle of culture and art. An entire city in ruins is a rare sight, and it has been preserved quite well after the United Nations earmarked Hampi as an endangered world heritage location.
Mindblowing architecture, sculpture and a feeling of being lost somewhere in time, a perfect getaway!

It sounds like it may have changed a lot since I went in 1993, but I loved it. We were there for the World Cup of cricket when India beat Pakistan and then went on to the final (as I recall) so it was the right place to be to experience cricket at its best! The temples were incredible, all made from exfoliated granite which makes amazing sounds when tapped, and many of the temples were actually orchestra and dancing areas, as well as for more religious purposes. The river was crossed by coracle to other villages on the other side including a saddhu with famed chillum – hum, seems like a tourist trick to me but the bike ride through the fields was pretty exciting! The huge wagon in the centre of Hampi was quite stunning, enormous. Getting there from Goa was a bit of a palaver, ferry, lift with some locals in a Mahindra jeep, then we stayed in one hotel where the owner thought it was perfectly acceptable to attempt to climb into our beds during the night but lucikly there were three of us so we managed to get him out of the room.

Unbelievable. You could stay a year. Many people do. Possibly the one of the weirdest places I’ve been to – possibly one of the big locations of godly battles in the Ramayana – historically the scene of thousands of years of fighting between Muslims and Hindus.
The stories from early Portugese explorers are literally gob-smacking and defy any modern movie maker’s imaginations – hard nut rulers, jewels as big as your head, beautiful damp silk drapes hanging from every pillar and post, deep spooky temples and musical stone pillars.
