Amazing experience. I recommend reading about the construction before you go…then you can marvel. The shopping in Panama is incredible because it is a bottle neck of world commerce, so you can get items from all over the world there. The local crafts are awesome also.

I loved Panama. The canal was still quite inspiring, though some people don’t think seeing the locks is all that exciting. The canal is more a series of lakes and river connected together. There is even a yacht club on the canal! They don’t tell you these things.

For some reason I thought the Panama Canal was going to be some massive awe-inspiring structure. Granted it is an engineering feat, but I felt decieved.

The huge cargo ships that pass through are actually quite skinny, so the canal needn’t be very wide.

Make sure you visit at a time of day when they are letting the bigger ships through, now that is a sight to behold.

    My Dad's Dream  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

My 85 year old father had one dream, to cruise the Panama Canal. After Cancer surgery, my wife and I took he and my mom, and it was the fulfillment of a lifetime. The cruise ship (Celebrity) played all the historical stuff on the way. 16 day cruise was just last May. He passed last month, and never stopped talking of the trip. It was perfect! The best thing I EVER did in my life was to take him on that trip.

    Worth visiting!

The canal zone was still run by the US back in 1965 when I visited there as a Boy Scout. I have no idea if the locks are even accessible to tourists anymore, but the Miraflores locks have stuck in my memory as amazing engineering works for all these years.

We overlooked the canal. It was very peaceful on The Amador Causeway, we need to return to visit the city.

I have traversed the Panama Canal 6 times on 2 different classes of cruise ships. It is hot, it is steamy but it is amazing. Read something about the history, the construction and you too will be fascinated. Watch the locks, watch other ships go through.
Can’t say enough about it… go, if you can.
