But its loyal citizens haven't given in to the consequences of job flight and high unemployment, and there is evidence of redevelopment throughout downtown, with recycled loft and factory buildings standing beside modern glass towers. Springfield remains the most important city in western Massachusetts and has enjoyed some success in attracting new enterprises. Vacationers can pass a few hours or an overnight here, but Springfield is primarily a stop on the way north or south. (read article)
