Palenque

Take the time to visit the smaller groups. They are engulfed in jungle and it is there, where fewer tourists get to, that it is possible to sense the mystery and true beauty of Palenque…and Mayan existence.

p.s. Stick around for the afternoon…far less people. It’s nice to go see the main plaza when you’re not fighting for a view around tour groups and obnoxious digital camera users trying for the absolute perfect shot.

Wonderfully preserved temples in a jungle setting. It was a thrill to see some of the unexcavated temples covered with plants and imagine what they would look like once they had all been cleared away. Gave you a bit of an idea of what the site must have originally looked like and how much work had gone into clearing away the jungle.

I took this package tour which bussed groups to two waterfalls in adition to palenque. Palenque was great, better in the morning b/f it gets crowded. Somehow we walked in without paying? Explore!

I’ve been to all the major archeological sites in mexico and guatemala and for my liking Palenque is the best.

It’s jungle setting adds to the feel of the place.

Its magic to wander around the ruins and imagine what it must have looked like in all it’s glory.

If you’re into this kind of thing allow a full day to explore the site.
