Well i was in leh during the summers of ‘06. Getting a bike on rent is pretty easy. I was alone and wanted to goto pangong lake alone on bike though localities never like this idea.
But as i was very fascinated by the idea of “I sudn’t be alive” a series running on discovery channel. So i rented a bike and started my journey during noon and the only thing i was wishing is breaking down of bike. Well, and my bike didn’t disappointed me and it started showing probs with the gear box half way wen i reach at the top. At that point i can cm back easily but i opted for the hard way and kept going reached my destination by the evening i.e. paggong lake. The place is like heaven, i spend my night with the army men there though they were not allowed to have civilians for the night stay but i smhow b able convince them as my bike is in no mood for going back. So i was one of the very few tourists who spent their night at pangong place. Next day, i stated draging my bike back to leh city and it was very tiring thing to do but it was the very thing i was wishing for so no complains.
Enjoyed my visit there, i wish i also had got a flat tire too as there is no mechanics.
To me its the best place i ever been too.

Well, in 2004, I stayed in Leh city and visited all the places around it for 3 months. And the sum is that I’m again willing to go there once again..
This is a wonderful place on the planet.. If you love mountains, Ladakh is a place you should not miss to visit.
I’ll be visiting Ladakh again in July or August 2007 and of course, will be happy to get a nice travel companion.

My interest in going to Ladakh came from seeing the documentary film Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh. It shows about how this traditional Buddhist culture changed in a very short time once the the military roads were opened for public use and tourists began coming to the area. If you can’t see the film, I highly recommend the book for anyone interested on how traditional sustainable cultures are impacted by modern development and global society.
