Worth visiting!
The last time I went to this place
It poured down with rain. Nonetheless it has some interesting cultural highlights – obviously the port is the heart of the tourist focus. I didn’t take to it straightaway, and I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back, or spend more than a day there but if you’re in the Charente, you should take a look.

So beautiful. I had the best moules frites of my life in La Rochelle, and other good things too. I would definitely go back for, maybe, ever.

Introduction to La Rochelle

Once known as the French Geneva, La Rochelle is a historic port and ancient sailors' city, formerly the stronghold of the Huguenots. It was founded as a fishing village in the 10th century on a rocky platform in the center of a marshland. Eleanor of Aquitaine gave La Rochelle a charter in 1199, freeing it from feudal dues. After becoming an independent city-state, the port capitalized on the wars between France and England. It was the departure point for the founders of Montréal. From the 14th to the 16th century, La Rochelle was one of France's great maritime cities. It became the principal port between France and the colony of Canada, but France's loss of Canada ruined its Atlantic trade.
