Me and a friend of mine visited the island in june 2005. It was pretty hot but there are lots of places to get out of the sun. We brought a small kayak and snorkel gear in addition to all our other camping gear it was incredible. The snorkeling is the best I experienced in the keys and the fact that there is no technology on the island whatsoever is great. The history and the fort are interesting too, but I would say the solitude, and scenery are the selling points.

this is my local favorite getaway. just to Be surrounded By water in a place where there is no electricity/running water/ cars/no phones, etc is totally amazing and so relaxing. there are 12 rangers that live here year round and their electricity is received from a generator. the history is incrediBle. to walk amongst the grounds can Be mesmerizing. snorkling around the fort is exciting as the water is clear and the fish are not afraid to approach you and engage in a staring contest. i highly recommend visiting this island! hugs

If you go here, spend the money to take a plane rather than a boat trip. You’ll have much more time on the island!! You can camp here too, I want to do that next I visit. So much history here.

Went in ‘87 on a HS Marine Biology trip and we camped out. I think we were the only people on the entire island for 3 days. What a great experience, glad I had the opportunity to see it prior to becoming a National Park.

    Cheers

Next time I go, I want to camp. and stay a few days. We took a cat over. I got sick on the boat. snorkling was cool, there are tons of fish living in / around the moat. It’s a very unique place.
