If you get on Hwy 1 going south from Monterrey, about 40 to 50 miles on the right is a turn off for a secluded beach. There’s private houses back there and the access road is TERRIBLE (not recommending trucks, vans, SUVs or anything other than mini-compact vehicles) but the view is absolutely breathtaking. So worth it!

A beautiful and vast landscape of the Pacific Coast. A great place to get away and experience coastal nature. Relax, eat well, and savor the moments spent there!

in the big sur camp grounds entrance there is a bridge. There is one spot on that bridge that you can jump from and into the river below and never reach the bottom. The ranger herself jumps from the bridge on occasion :]

Drove through as previously mentioned last summer. It was a absolute blast going up the coast. perfect weather and sunshine. We stayed at new brighton and had a great campsite, hung out at the beach, saw all these fantastic bridges. It was worth it to get off the interstate. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Take the drive. I am a local and still do it. But tourists have to be careful of the road. It is REALLY narrow and windey, there have been a lot of accidents because people spend more time looking at the coast than they do the road. Luckily there are pull-offs so you can get out of your car and look around. Plus the beaches are prime. If you drive far enough, look for a place called Pt. Lobos. Not too many people know about it and there are some really beautiful coves there. Don’t be in a hurry either. You will drive past a million sweet spots and not even realize it. So have a look-out with you, or if your going at it alone, check it out before-hand. The Big Sur campgrounds are really nice, so I totally recommend that.
Nepenthe is a nice restaurant, so if you are trying to pick between that and Rocky Point, go for Nepenthe (the food is better).

I’ve lived on the Central Coast for most of my life, so camping trips here were common as I grew up. I have the best memories of this place. As I got older I would have road trips with friends and we’d pretend we were scavenger hippies traveling up the coast. It’s really an amazing drive. I love Nepenthe too. I always stop just to get some spiced apple cider.
