Fantastic stone temples carved from the native rocks overlooking the ocean. I spent a few days here many years ago. It’s a sleepy seaside town south of Chennai (Madras), more popular with Indian tourists than westerners.

Worth visiting!

Stone carving is not a lost art

Stone carving thrives in Mamallapuram. One hears the sound of mallets landing on chisels on every street. Some of the carvings can fit in your pocket, others are larger than life. The material isn’t clay, or cast metal, it’s basalt or granite, the stuff pyramids and castles are made of. It’s totally gorgeous.
