The desert town of Marfa in West Texas is a seemingly odd place for a vacation, but cultural destinations (such as the Judd Foundation, for art buffs) and the chic campgrounds at El Cosmico make it worth a visit. Sleep in one of the tricked-out Airstreams or yurts during one of the site’s culinary weekends. Chef Lou Lambert will teach visitors to cook such dishes as barbacoa ravioli and Dutch-oven wagyu short ribs, all against a desert-sky background.

People ask me all the time why this is on my list. I confess that initially I added it simply because Marfa was what I called myself as a child (before I could pronounce the “th” sound).

But then when I started to read about it – the lights, the art, the small town feel, I became very serious about going here. It may still be a ways off, but it’s at least on my list, which is a start!

I saw the lights! by Justsyd

I’ve wanted to visit Marfa for more than twenty years after I read about the Marfa lights. I finally visited, ready to believe that they were just a hoax. After being there for only about 10 minutes more then twenty lights appeared. I watched them chase each other through my binoculars for almost an hour. No way that car lights can do that. It was pretty amazing.
