Not worth it!
Have been to Roanoke a couple times while driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and can’t say I’m vastly impressed with it.

ive lived in roanoke for a while but then my family decided to move to Florida.I like it better in florida..but sometimes i miss the simplicity of roanoke and the mountains.Winter time is pretty there too.For younger people there really isnt that much to do there and when i visit all me and my friends do is go to valley view mall or the movies. thats about it.downtown is really pretty though.the star is not as exciting as people make it sound its just nature rocks and stuff :D

The most difficult years of my life occured in the Roanoke Valley. Some of the Greatest changes in my life occured in this Valley. Some of my best memories were made in this valley. Diverse and beautiful.

I lived in the Noke and around the Noke for most of my life. As a teenager it was boring, granted, but for outdoor activities and simple beauty it can’t be beat. The people are a unique mix, the scenery will take your breath away and after living on the West Coast I miss the history that is taked for granted there.

Not worth it!
We made a weekend of it, and decided to travel the several hundred miles to see this city. We were very disappointed. We traveled the entire length of the city and its suburbs, from east to west, on Route 460…from Vinton right through the city of Roanoke to Salem, then to Interstate 81. What we found was a depressing, old, broken-down town with a downtown and Farmers’ Market that looked like people were trying to make it look quaint, but the surrounding areas just dragged it back to Shantytown. Now, don’t flame, this is what we saw. No, we did not see ALL of the city, perhaps there were newer areas that are nicer. We did see the star, which was very nice, and we loved the beautiful mountainous surroundings. But the city itself was a real disappointment. We were looking for a shining beacon of what a southern city could be in the 21st century, and what we found was a town about 150 years after its prime.
