Not worth it!
Pretty. Relaxing. But overall quite boring. YMMV

We went to a town called Oak Bluffs and honestly the best thing about the trip was the ferry ride over. The town is extremely touristy and not in a good way. The only thing to do there is shop and every store has the exact same merchandise – all Martha’s Vineyward sweatshirts, t-shirts, magnets, etc. It’s like 50 gift shops all in a row. Everyone was extremely rude, including both the tourists and the locals. Apparently the local shopowners think that they have enough tourists moving through there every day that there is no reason to be polite. Also, we went to eat at a place called Lookout Tavern. The food was terrible (overcooked lobster, cold corn and potatoes, terrible presentation and way overpriced) and the waitress was an idiot (no refills, cherry coke with so much grenadine it was undrinkable, slow service, slow to clean the table off). The tip reflected the poor food and service, but still I left her 10%, which I thought was fair. She followed me outside, called me cheap, and then added an extra $10 thinking I would never notice! When I called the manager he said he would have the accountant look into it, and then told me that it was an error on my bank’s part, but he would have the account back it off and reapply “just in case.” Yeah, right. The charge posted as what it was supposed to but my bank told me the first charge couldn’t possibly have been an error on their part because they have no control over card charges – it all comes directly from the merchant. Save your time and money and skip this place.

I’ve been going there since I was 9 or 10-years old. The first time my parents left me there for the summer with some good friends.
Had a bike, a fishing rod, and 25-cents a day spending change. And my life was changed forever.
Have been taking my 11-year old daughter there since she was seven months old.
Now she thinks of it as her place… and that makes me very happy, :-).

I have read some of the entries about places to go on the island and I think one thing that people have missed is the great food on the island. There are some really great restaurants, some on the expensive side, but that is the best part of being on vacation! Some of my favorites are Lure, Beach Plum Inn, Sweet Life Cafe and Mediterranean. For a more casual dinner, try Slice of Life – great for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Best of all, they serve La Columbe coffee from Philadelphia!!! But, by far, the best coffee on the island is at Beetlebung in Vineyard Haven….very laid back but the bessstttt coffee ever!! Espresso Love used to be my favorite, but last couple of times I was there, it just wasn’t the same. Another thing to check out is the Farmer’s Market in Chillmark – check the local papers for dates/times, but great for local produce/jams/flowers & a little local culture. Try Larsens for a cheap lobster dinner…stop in earlier in the day to place your order for lobster and steamers served up with cole slaw and maybe a little chowder..around 6 or 7, pick up your hot dinner – bring your own bread, wine and towels if you want to hang out and have a picnic dinner on the lobster crates out back. Another great place is Morning Glory Farms – they open at 9 am with hot, fresh baked muffins, local produce and freshly brewed coffee. Great to hang out on the front porch in the rocking chairs or walk around the nursery to check out the beautiful flower gardens. Ok, one more place – Among the Flowers for breakfast or lunch – coffee is not that great, so get from Espresso Love up the street(closest best coffee in Edgartown) Their waffles with fresh fruit and yogurt is great! For lunch, salads and sandwiches are fresh and healthy. Will add more details about places to go later….take care and enjoy your trip….I am ready to go back just talking about it!

The gas prices seemed so high. A year or so later, we saw the same prices on the main land. I loved all the little shops and thought it was really interesting that some parts of the island were “dry” and didn’t serve or sell liquor.

Stephanie asks,
“I'll be taking a day trip to the vineyard in a two weeks. What should I see. Can anyone recommend some must see sights?”
