We mostly travel to the islands by boat, but the scenic highway 2 is also a decent path. Devil’s Island is the most interesting; the water hits it so hard that it has underwater caves that, when hit with waves, often “spout” through holes over the island. Madeline Island has a ferry from the mainland and is the only island with a full-blown city on it. The water is typically quite chilly as it is Lake Superior. Take caution if boating/kayaking/canoeing/etc. Often people do not realize the strong of Lake Superior’s water. During my last visit while in Cornucopia (a small town near the islands), a girl scout troop from Arizona (I believe) got caught out in the waters during a bad storm and came close to losing their life (when we left we still hadn’t heard of they found the other ten girls); but the leaders just didn’t realize how bad it could get. Be prepared.

Stockton and Oak Islands, amazing. Watch out for the brown bears!

I grew up in the area and it really is beautiful. I would definitely recommend a summer visit. But if the wind sled or the ice road are your thing then winter is nice too. Definitely fewer people in the winter.
