It dumped 20 inches of snow (after hardly in Europe at all this season) on my birthday. Made for a wonderful white birthday with some sweet powder riding.
Only regret is I got serious altitude sickness when we took the tram up to Cervina, so I didn’t get to board the Italian side. They say it can hit you once and then never again, or now and then, or sometimes all the time- so hopefully next time I’m up that high I won’t feel like I’m going to hurl and pass out. :>
I can only imagine how amazing this place is when it’s snowing day after day after day. Ah, I hope to go back!

As tourist you shouldn’t miss Zermatt and the Matterhorn honestly. If you know the chocolate Toblerone so you now the matterhorn and i can tell you in real it is 1000 times nicer!
If you are planning to go in this area you can ask me at any time i grew up in this mountain area… See ya

Ski the entire mountain, from left to right, all in one day. I don’t mean ski every run, just ski all the sections.
They’ll say you can’t do it, but you can if you’re good. Go up the cog-wheel train as early as you can, go up all the gondolas, ski down the left side of the mountain, take the gondolas to the top near the Matterhorn, ski all the way down to Italy, and make it back before the lifts close. You’ll have had one of the longest skis possible in a ski resort without ever retracing your steps.

I’ve skied in Zermatt twice (and visited for a day in the summer). Going again in December 2006.
The first time there were high winds which meant no skiing on two of the days. That was gutting! The second time was in March 2005 and very warm, but nothing to stop lots of long days of fun skiing!

a cute town with pretty wooden chalets… but probably the most touristy of the Swiss mountain towns i’ve seen. Japanese tourists are everywhere here (similar to Grindelwald). but it doesn’t matter, because the views of the Matterhorn more than make up for it. i’ve seen much of the Swiss alps (including the famous Jungfrau), and honestly, the Matterhorn was the only one that i’ve found to be an emotional experience. in person, it is like something out of a miracle, a spectacle of nature. also, keep your eyes peeled in zermatt, because you might just be talking to an Olympian (i met a Nagano Games medal holder here, she was the owner of a restaurant).

New Year’s Eve 1999 into 2000. We started the evening off late, having dinner at a quiet little place, the name of which I don’t remember. We took our time and enjoyed every moment of our quiet dinner, finishing somewhere around 10:30 p.m. We walked around the town just taking in the sites. We stopped at a snow sculpture in front of a church and my boyfriend carved “Don & Dee 2000” into the sculpture. It was very cute and I was having a great time. At around 11:30 p.m. we decided to congregate in front of that same church with what seemed like everyone else in town for the big countdown. It was great. The atmosphere was positively electric and you couldn’t even feel the cold. Then came the countdown … 10 … 9 …. 8 …. Oooo! It’s gettting close!! 3 … 2 … 1 … “Will you be my old lady?” What? Oh my Gods! Did you just … ? You did!!! Okay … Wow! And then, of course, I started crying for the next 10 or so minutes. My tears mixed with the champagne that was being poured on my head by everyone around us. It was a very emotional moment. Eventually, I did answer him … the answer was yes! And that’s how my life was changed in Zermatt.
