Swimming with marine life  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I’ve been to a lot of beaches in the world, but the most impressive were in Fiji and Australia—especially Byron Bay. If you like swimming in the ocean, no place is more idyllic than here. The water is crystal clear, deep, the surf is fantastic for swimming and surfing, and you will find that many animals will enjoy swimming along side you (mosly dolphins). The beach is wide and clean, and unlike a lot of tourist destinations, no one will try to sell you stuff. The town itself is easygoing and the folks that hang out there are very friendly. My friend and I stayed at a hostel there that was mere blocks from one beach—I forget the name, but it was clean and we had the place mostly to ourselves. I would definitely go back in March, as the conditions were perfect (in my opinion). Highly recommended!!!!!

Byron Shire...Something for everyone  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I lived in the Byron Bay area for 12 years. It truly has something for everyone.

Keep in mind that most people only stop in Byron Bay itself, whereas the surrounding area is where most of the beatiful spots are located.

I strongly recommend renting a car as there is virtually no public transport. If you love pristine beaches, drive to Broken Head and turn down Seven Mile Beach Rd. There are incredible beaches located there with rainforest going all the way down to the shore.

Also, drive out to Minyon Falls, Wanganui or Protestors Falls to walk through the most amazing forests.

If, however, you want to dine, drink and party, Byron Bay is the place to be.

i remember hitchhiking thru byron back in ‘97 – princess di had just died and australia was in mass mourning. i stayed at the crazy hippie yurt/tent/van campground with the on-site yoga studio and veggie cafe/movie house. i think this place was classified as a hostel. had a wild time, surfed lots, and will always remember the sunrise at the lighthouse as well as rides thru nimbin country in search of fellow woofers.

Overcrowded in peak season but still has lots to see  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I’ve been here about 3 times and to the general area about 8 times.

Byron itself is getting a bit overcrowded in the peak season, but you don’t have to go far at all to get to some wonderful places.

Snorkelling at Julian Rocks was overpriced but great. Cape Byron reserve is pretty. The lighthouse walk is great. Swimming/boogey boarding with dolphins was wonderful.

If you don’t like the main beach there are other great beaches around the place. I like the pass (the one in the photo up here).

Up the hill a bit Minyon Falls is very impressive.
