Worth visiting!

From my travel diary/photo album on Saturday April 2nd 1994 (yikes)

Woke to Richard yelling for the “Damn Yankee”. Tried to meet Steve & Adrien at the bar. Left note. Had “pilgrimage” to Lindisfarne/Holy Island. Walked. Saw castle & church ruins, had mead, lost my glasses. Found Steve & Adrien at different bar in Belford. Gav cooked dinner – we drank wine, beer & port and played games.

Things to remember:
My earrings played in the wind at Holy Island
Man’s choir singing “How Great Thou Art”
Playing “I never…”

The first time I went to this place

We were passing by on the way home south, and after checking the tides, drove along the causeway. The skies were threatening rain, so we walked up to Lindisfarne Castle and admired its outline against a sombre sky. It was strange thinking that in just a few hours the tide would sweep in and cut the island off from the mainland.

Lindisfarne

An amazing, beautiful and spiritual place! Been a few times but one tip I’ll give you is take your own food…sometimes it can be really difficult to find anywhere that is serving food and when you do it is absolutely packed out! Try the Lindisfarne Mead, it’s a must! The journey over can be a bit scary if you don’t stick to the tidal times on the board. Don’t be impatient…those extra couple of minutes can make quite a difference…trust me! In future I will definitely be sticking to the recommended crossing times!

But make sure the bus is running

...and know the tides – It’s a 6 mile walk otherwise. Beautiful and peaceful, once you shake off the bus loads of tourists!

Alnwick and Alnmouth are nice too. We were lucky and had a freak sunny weekend. I expect it’s generally a little cooler.

With Wet Feet

I only made it by coach, and only just after the tide had receded (the road was still wet, the water still moving). I had so little time there—i only just glimpsed the priory ruins and the tiny church (where i heard strange flute noises coming up from the water, i think).

I need to go back, and this time by foot.
