When I first got to Penang I was disappointed. My budget hotel was in the downtown city section of the island, which is, to be honest, pretty ugly. But Penang is awesome. The island and the city have tons to offer a tourist. Take the railcar up the mountain but be sure to hike down through the jungle to see hundreds of monkey families. The food is killer.

penang is really close to indonesia

wen i was on holiday there was an earthquake in northen sumatra from penang i could feel the tremors it was both SCARY and EXCITING it was on tuesday march 29 2005 at 12.15 am in england it would be about 4 pm.

the pools shuk outside the t.v nearly fell off the stand. people went on their balconies one little girl was screaming and crying. oh yeh and the neighbours slept rite through it LOL.

but dont worry if u go there penang is 2 far away from indonesia for there 2 b any real damage
BUT and a very BIGBUT remember the tsunami??? of course u do boxing day 2005 a lot of ppl died tht day and after tht the island penang is behind a very long stretch of land if tht land wasnt there the island wud b under the sea rite now probably.

penang is very hot and gr8 if u want a tan the locals are frendly and kind and the stuff there is cheap water sports at the beach. BUT agen lol watch for jellyfish i got stung in 2005 i survived obviously but becoz it was a baby jellyfish

overall the island is very exotic and a lovely place 2 stay i recommend the golden sands hotel!!! excellent
