poe in lower manhattan, mrs. fosters boarding house by danimatian
This is the site of Mrs. Foster’s boarding house. Poe would have lived here on and off in 1844
I feel this place inspired Edgar Poe’s The Bells.. the loudness of this area drove him crazy. The nearby Barnum Museum had a brass band playing all hours of the night, plus the sounds of the horses on the cobblestone was enough to drive anyone mad. Poe hated the sounds of new york city.
theres no pix of this place because it’s been destroyed.
some of the points on this list come from a walking tour i did when I moved to lower manhattan. see that over at poets.org
