...I had just got finished with about 52 straight hours of traveling and/or being in transit. Needless to say the moment I got off the ferry and was actually able to set my back down, kick up my feet and soak in the fresh Thai sun was a moment I won’t soon forget!
If you have even the slightest shred of wanderlust, you should make your way to Thailand. Yes, it’s cheap (at least once you’re there). Yes, the food is great and the beaches unbelievable. But as pleasant as all those niceties are the one element that is uniquely Thailand are its people. Quite possibly the kindest in the world, always willing to lend a helping hand, the Thai people are the one feature that cannot be duplicated.
Koh Pha-Ngan is a wonderful island get away and the island offers as much, or little “get away” as you want. Haad Rin is the home of the famous Full Moon Party… enough said. But if the rave scene isn’t your thing then just jump a long tail and they’ll shuttle you away to some place where your only worry will be how you’ll ever be able to transition to “normal” life again!
There’s so much information on Koh Pha-Ngan and Thailand in general I don’t know what more I could add. My picture is of where I stayed while in Haad Rin. I’d highly recommend it – Sea Breeze was it’s name (aptly named at that).

this island is for all the young people. loud music until 5am, drinks.. i even jumped through a ring of fire on haad rin beach. i didnt go to the full moon party as it wasnt happening while i was on ko pha-ngan. rent a room thats a few minutes walk from the beach, otherwise the music will keep you up all night. Do NOT rent a room at the ‘drop in club’ or whatever its called…we were so close to the party that the bass actually moved my bed during the night!

Skip the full moon party and stay at a place off the beaten path. Meet a few locals (it takes some work, but you can do it!). Don’t hike on the Island without proper gear, including water.

after getting there, i rented a motorcycle and rode along the island. It was very peaceful and quiet, especially in the morning. Lot of coconut trees and dogs!

I stayed at the Sanctuary on my honeymoon and had a lovely time. Very relaxing, great food and fresh juices etc…
We stayed at the ocean view room (I think that’s what it was called), the view was gorgeous (see pic) and it felt like you were alone in the jungle.

The green curry right next to the bungalows we stayed at was awesome. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name or the location of the place, but this was back in 1991 so it’s probably all different now anyway, or the chef quit, or both. I realize this is a useless traveler tip, but it’s a really nice memory for me.

if chillin on a hot sunny beach with great food, tasty cocktails and wonderfull people (or no people) are your idea of bliss then this is a spot you should aim for.

I just loved this place – the (local!) people were awesome and it was sooo quiet on hadrin beach. (Except for full moon parties of course) But I fear it changed since 1993…
