Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. The city is built out of stone, and the streets look like they are made out of marbel. One of the churches is said to be built by Richard Lionheart.

It’s true – Dubrovnik is pretty touristy, however, it seemed like most of the tourists stayed near the main street. I visited Croatia in July and somehow I was often the only person (besides the people working there) in the museums. When it’s really hot outside, it’s really relaxing. I also found a nice park near the old town, where I could read books without any interruption.

The prices are quite high in the old town, so I’d advise you to do your shopping in Tommy (shopping center).

Please make sure, where your accommodation is located. I had to walk thousands (possibly I’m exaggerating) of steps every day! Good for staying fit, though.

I had great time there. Nothing can beat walking home from the old town, catchy melodies accompanying my way, and the sweet scent of flowers in my nose :)
Have to add one thing – during my stay I felt really really safe.

I had wanted to go to Dubrovnik for so long and finally got there in June this year but I was so disappointed. It’s beautiful in many ways, but a bit over-rated really and too geared for tourists, of which there are millions. The locals can be somewhat rude and the prices are sky high.
If planning to go, steer clear of the summer months and go off season (before the end of May and after the end of Sept). It will still be warm but at least you won’t have to battle the crowds, and the wallet!

I´ve been one week in Dubrovnik because of a friend´s wedding. It´s really beautiful and it´s amazing how they have built all the old city again after the war in 1992.
    Just stunning!

    Not worth it!

We had bad luck with our rooms, were lied to and treated like we were bothering them…

Then there were the roaming tour groups engulfing restaurants and streets and sights. (And this was only shoulder season!)

And every evening the restaurant and trinket hawkers (sharks) roamed the Stradun asking every time you go by if you are hungry, would you like blah blah blah, etc.

Then there was the ‘TI’ center I went into to ask a simple question and they would only help me if I wanted to pay for a tour or buy a map or something. Blech.

It was beautiful, but too sterile with all the locals having moved out and renting to tourists.

The highlight was walking the walls, and I’m glad I went, but if I go back to Croatia I’d much rather do more island hopping than go to Dubrovnik again.

One time I found it to feel more real was in the morning (7 AM - 10AM or so, before the cruise ships belch their hordes) when some locals were out shopping and restocking and getting shaves in the barber shop.

Beautiful, but it made me sad. Rumor is that Oprah’s buying a house here. Nice for her, but housing prices are through the roof.

Scars from the war of the 90’s everywhere amidst the building frenzy.

Still a beautiful stretch of the coast, however, and the walls of the old city are impressive.
