Great buzz around festival time!  — 1 month ago

    Worth visiting!

There are street performers and people handing out leaflets for plays. If you don’t speak French, there are still some productions that you can enjoy – I went to see a show with flamenco dancers, it was amazing!

Visit the nearby lavender fields (in season) – they’re a photographer’s dream. And take a boat trip on the Rhone – you’ll get some wonderful views of Avignon.

great theatre festival in july, in which the city is so alive and fun, even if just to wander around the streets, the entertainment is everywhere.

Our friends were living in Avignon for a year and had invited people to take advantage of their space. We decided to take them up on it, so i started reading the Avignon Quintet (mostly because i’m a fan of the Alexandria Quartet).

I only got as far as Monsieur (it’s the only one i brought, really). Durrell disappointed me a bit by straying so far from the walls, while we stayed within the walls, mostly, despite the tantalizing views. The most exciting bit was the anti-CPE march we joined. (This was back in March.) The photos are here

I think the best part was having friends who live there, and a home base that really was a home base. They could tell us what they liked and where to wander.

it is on many people’s “to do” list of france, and yes with good reason. go to the point of the famous bridge, sing the song, and danse. personally, i think the nearby (smaller) city if Nimes is much more impressive.

Sur le pont d’Avignon on y danse on y danse…

I was there twice. Love the city. The Papal palace was beautiful and the city itself has little streets worth exploring, a few nice squares, great to visit when the weather is good.

We stopped in Avignon to visit the famous pont and le city des papes (the palace of the popes). Which was pretty nice, but they charge you to actually stand on the bridge, so we didn’t bother to do that. Avignon is probably most interesting to visit during it’s theater festival in summer.
