Arles

Take the little tourist train to get a good overview of Arles. This was the first time that I’d used one and now I’m hooked! It went down some streets that I probably wouldn’t have thought to explore but turned out to be worth another look on my own.

The 2 main start/stop points are outside the amphitheatre and the tourist office. There are headphones with multi-language commentary.

I really enjoyed my stay in Arles and recommend it as an alternative base to Avignon for exploring the region. It has a more intimate feel and is very compact so easy to get around on foot (though beware the steep inclines around the amphitheatre!).

A nice touch for Van Gogh lovers are the plaques outside the subjects of his paintings, with a reproduction of the paintings on them so that you can compare his and the modern day views.

I’d like to visit the Roman amphitheatre (though probably not to watch any bullfighting) and stand at the same viewpoint that Van Gogh painted in Starry Night over the Rhone.

Saw the course carmaguaise, flamingos, got a sunburn that has left a 6 month old tan line as a reminder

i’m fancy about the sunlight in Arles, which made Von Gough dizzy. and… are there sunflower fields? I’d love to see that. haven’t seen a sunflower field in my life yet.
