Palmyra

I lived in Palmyra for several years. The biggest draw is the Mormon Pageant. They recently added a temple and the visitors center has been redone. It is definately worth visiting, even if you are not a member.

If you are interested in history, you will find signs with historic information all over the area including information on the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman.

It’s too bad the heart of Palmyra still looks scummy. Some of the houses really have character and could benefit from a town facelift. I used to live about 10 minutes away from Palmyra and would drive through it frequently while growing up. I still drive through it every time I come home to visit my parents. It’s right off the NY State Thruway.

My high school used to play sports against Pal-Mac.

I’ve been to several Mormon pageants (having been a Mormon for the first couple of decades of my life), and the Hill Cumorah is the best one. The one in Nauvoo, IL (“City of Joseph”) is a bit saccharin for me, and the one in Manti, UT could have been done by high school students. I’ve been to this one twice, in the early 1990s.
