Despite what some of these entries have to say, I found the French Quarter to be charming, yes after Katrina. The city is very vibrant and definitely still trying to rebuild. The streets are cleaned regularly, but there is a bit of a smell to it. It’s a big city so higher crime rates, homelessness, and parking problems just come with that. Using common sense is all that it takes to be safe here. It’s definitely worth visiting at least once! Just walking down Dauphine St. feels like being in a different country.

The French Quarter of New Orleans has a charm that lingers; even after Katrina. I was there for a weekend this spring and was overwhelmed by the delicious scent of the sweet olive blossoms that line the streets of the quarter. I had coffee at the Cafe Du Monde and sat people-watching as I always have, for hours, undisturbed. As I was sitting I realized that I actually love this city. I love finding the secret courtyards and gardens just off the beaten path, and the fabulous architecture lends an air of mystique that reminds me of my travels to Europe. I enjoy having dinner at the local restaurants where fried oysters, fois gras, pralines, sweet potatoes and thick seafood gumbos have all graced my plate. Among my favorites are K Paul’s, Peristyle, Irene’s, Muriel’s, and Lola’s. I haven’t mentioned music. For me, the sounds of the horse drawn buggies, the Pie Lady calling out her wares on Royal street, the drones of the ghost tour narratives ( do the guides always tell the truth?), the cathedral bells, and the accents of tourists from over the world, are even sweeter than the wonderful jazz heard up on Bourbon Street. I also love the art museums and the galleries that are some of the best in America. Before heading back to the Mississippi coast, I usually visit the majestic St. Louis Cathedral and offer up a prayer for peace and goodness to be restored in this world. This time I will pray for the great city of New Orleans to be rebuilt and for all y’all to come to know its unique charm.

I used to live in New Orleans and worked in the French Quarter. I don’t like Bourbon Street. Maybe because I used to work there. It is not good for anything except for people who want to get drunk or go to clubs. I liked the parts of the French Quarter by the river or the French Market and by the church. But I don’t know what it looks like now to be honest because I left that place before Katrina.

Not worth it!
Other than going once in your life to say you did, I wouldnt recommend…. That is unless you are there to party. The streets were dirty and smelled aweful. The only things to do were to get out of the French Quarter into the Garden District. There were some cool shops and places to snack. Glad I only stayed for a couple days.
