Why I want to go to this place  — 2 months ago

I would absolutely love to go to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Odditorium to see all of the crazy stuff there, Rock ‘n’ Roll Ralphs to look for rockstars, Frederick’s of Hollywood to pick up some sexy lingerie, Mann’s Chinese Theater to see a show and Marilyn Monroe’s handprints, the Hollywood sign just because, Hard Rock Cafe because the one in Myrtle Beach rocked, The Viper Room to get drunk and dance like a slut, and Hollywood Forever Cemetery to see the tombstones and possibly watch a movie.

I wasn’t so excited by LA but as a Londoner you like things compressed and accessible, like New York… Too much driving in a city like LA for me

I guess it’s worth seeing, just to say you’ve been there, but it’s not as exciting as it sounds.

A review of this place: Want to visit Hollywood? Read Raymond Chandler.  — 5 months ago

    Not worth it!

Hollywood is about an hour and a half drive from where I sit, yet I’ve been there less than 3 times in the past 4 years. The Hollywood strip, with it’s Sidewalk of Stars try to bring the glimmer and hope of the skies to eye level. Hollywood hopes you keep your eyes to the ground and disregard the tattoo parlors, the head shops, and David’s Shoes’ (not a typo, sadly, no longer there). Mann’s Chinese Theater got an update, it’s no longer the famous theater of old (only the outside has changed). Raymond Chandler’s version of Hollywood of the 50’s and 60’s surprisingly tells the future of Hollywood, smog and all.

Rent a car if you come to visit. Actually, scratch that. If you come and visit, try to find a friend to cart you around. You wouldn’t want the stress of trying to drive 5 miles in 3 hrs. Bring your patience too, the city could use some.

I was anxious to go to Hollywood, but when I finally arrived in March of 2007, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. It was dirty, and there were way too many strip clubs, dirty stores, etc. Hollywood is for sure the second sin city!!

I live in southern California so the whole movie star allure isn’t really there for me, and the traffic always blows in L.A. but its a good place to go for concerts or other things to keep yourself entertained

    Worth visiting!

This is where I gre up. My Dad wanted to be a star so we move from Fort Benning Georgia to Hollywood. For many years I lived just down the street from the Chinese Theater.
Certainly there is plent to do but I probably take it all for granted seeing as I prefer Manhattan. LA is very spread out so as much as the traffic is a hassle you probably should rent a car. Public transportation isn’t very good. There are plent of hotels but be careful if you are out of state or in another country and you see a deal that sounds too good to be true—it just may be one of those motels where Hookers and Johns conduct there business. That said—Hollywood has indeed changed a lot over the years—for the better. Not only did a grow up there but I was a cop there as well.
Universal Studios is worth checking out, Disney Land has expanded but have ot done that yet. If you come during the summer and can see a concert at the Hollywood Bowl (outside venue set in a hillside) that is worth it. Melrose has plenty of shopping and places to eat, as does Beverly Hills and I really enjoy going to the Third street Promenade. If you can hook up with a local then you can find food, bars, and places that are really good. I don’t think LA quite makes the grade when it comes to exceptional restaurants—unlike Manhattan, where I have never had a bad meal. We have a reputation of being too laid back and pretentious—certainly there is plenty of that but LA is a mixed bag. A lot of people from other places call LA home.

much of the glimmer and shine portrayed is really just the glare and reflection of the garbage and general filth spread throughout the streets. a sleezy letdown of a city.
