For as long as I can remember I wanted a place on the Oregon coast. I was born in California and the coast there is so beautiful, but Oregon is just different. It’s quieter, it’s wilder, and from Seattle, much easier to visit by car.
Came across the perfect locale about 1.5 hours from Portland so we bought it. We’re now spending four weeks a year here, something I didn’t think was possible until we retired.
It’s different every time we go. Rainy, sunny, hailing, snow, sunny, raining…and that can be in one day.
Winter storms are incredible.
I can’t wait to spend more time down the road here.

Newport,OR. has a must-see aquarium. Astoria,OR. has amazing Victorians. The entire coastline is home to many historic lighthouses where you can climb to the top!
Newport, OR. has the best fish and chips and clam chowder on the planet at the “Lighthouse Cafe and Deli”. Gold’s Beach has an amazing coastline of gigantic “monolithic” bolders erupting from the sand and sea.
Coos Bay has a fabulous dunes recreation area where you can ride ATV’s or hike in the sand and spot hidden lagoons.
Check out the Botanical Garden with the only natural habitat for carnivorous pitcher plants. They are huge!
Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach has tons of fossils laying on the beach! Brookings, OR. has an annual kite festival.
If you like: Cafes, Bookstores, Galleries, Hiking, Seafood, Whale Watching, Glass Blowers, Antique Shops…
GO! GO! GO!..and buy a guide book, it’s well worth it. The coast holds secrets to be discovered.

The most amazing thing to do on the Oregon Coast is to watch the sun rise over the ocean. It was the biggest full moon I have ever seen, it was almost unreal. As I walked toward the ocean I was overcome with a feeling of being completely minuet. I knew at this point how big the world was by just looking at this moon that was enormous but the ocean seemed like it could have just swallowed it up! We then slept in tents approximately one block from the ocean and this was equally surreal. Listening to the waves crash against the shore and knowing that it wasn’t a tape lulling me to sleep was mind boggling.

LOVELOVELOVE the OR coast. Many great days and memories there. Go anytime of year. It isn’t one of those bikini type coasts, but the beauty is all natural. Can’t wait to get back to the OR coast.

I found a beach house that has a typical per-night price but an unbelievable 30-day deal. I mentioned it to my sister and a friend, and they both thought it sounded GREAT. So…we’re planning on splitting up the cost and the time in August 2008. My family and I get two weeks, my sister and my friend each get one. It works out to about the same per night as a budget chain hotel.

mejaka asks,
“Perhaps I should do this as a question. Can anyone suggest some of the more budget-friendly rentals on the Oregon coast? What itinerary or accomodations might you suggest for a 20th anniversary coastal trip? We live on one income with four children, so”
