I always go to Mendocino to relax. My favorite way to do it is a room at a B&B, a massage and sauna at the Sweetwater Inn & Spa, and a walk down on the headlands. There is absolutely nothing to be stressed about in Mendocino!

Be sure to visit Navarro Vineyards. Excellent wine, incredible selection, and they’re not stingy with the tastings.

I was back here again this past weekend, and I realized that Mendocino is pretty nice. The first time I was ever there it was a gloriously sunny spring day… one of those days where there are just way too many colors for a hungover head.

This weekend, it was grey and rainy and cold, but Mendocino was still nice. It seems to go from a pleasant outdoor stroll type of town to a rainy duck-into-fireplace-heated-rooms type of town rather seamlessly.

It also looks like a place they could have filmed Anne of Green Gables. Take that as a warning or a recommendation, as you see fit.

Despite (or because of) its relative isolation, it emerged as one of Northern California's major centers for the arts in the 1950s. It's easy to see why artists were -- and still are -- attracted to this idyllic community, a cluster of New England-style captains' homes and stores on headlands overlooking the ocean. At the height of the logging boom, Mendocino was an important and active port. Its population was about 3,500 residents, who constructed eight hotels, 17 saloons, and more than a dozen bordellos. Today, it has only about 1,000 residents, and most reside on the north end of town. On summer weekends, the population seems more like 10,000, as hordes of tourists drive up from the Bay Area.
