The last time I went to this place  — 1 year ago

well, last night i meet my husband at the Satellite up the street, he’d just come from Comet and said the didn’t have anything to drink except 3 taps (no cans, no hard stuff, no cheap beer…)...a couple hrs later when we popped in to see who was there, they were down to 1 tap (guiness)...and they had a band playing, which meant there were lots of people there and more on the way…ever since the owner of the building made Sam sell the place to someone else, the place has been slowly sinking….the paychecks have evidently been bouncing..which is pissing off people…and it seems, that if there is nothing to drink, that the new owner of the comet can’t pay the distributors either….i wonder how long before the building owner decides to give Comet back to Sam or sell it to someone else…

wow…i got so drunk that night, everyone kept buying me drinks and i kept drinking them all. i got destroyed, i was so sick that night that i did’nt drink for a long time. the Comet tavern is a good low key place, i recommend the corner booth by the window.

the "new " comet is ok, but i kinda miss the old one  — 1 year ago

it feels more like a actual bar now….before it was like an actual tavern: dark, mysterious, smoky, a bit dingy, full of great people who are regulars…..now, half the time i walk by, the place is DEAD (i can count all the people inside on 1 hand and that doesn’t include bartender(S)) OR most or all the people in and around I have no idea who they are….really sux….used to be able to pass by glance in and see this person and that person….maybe wave and pop my head in and holler, now most the regulars aren’t there as much as they used to be….
OH…and this really gets me, since the ownership trade over, they don’t have sodas to choose from on tap, just hot cans stuffed away underneath…ew!! not everyone like beer all the time!!! and juice???? come on! it’s a frilling BAR!!! not chuck e cheese (and EVEN they serve beer and wine for adults!); supposedly, as soon as they get their liquor lisence, they will bring back the cold soda tap(S)....
however, just one nice thing i really do like, the bathroom (even if it is still quite scary) is actually cleaner and better lite now it seems…
{wine glasses at comet..that’s funny! i got wine glasses, i use them for chocolate milk!! hahahaha!!!)

Changing ownership  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

Stopped in to the Comet yesterday for a pint after work to find the entire staff congregated around a couple of tables, excitedly volleying questions at some fellow I’d never seen there before. Evidently Sam (also owns the Satellite) has handed the gauntlet to said fellow (I forget his name).

I have mixed feelings about this, as I’ve been going to the Comet for about 12 years now (as long as I’ve lived in Seattle), and really love the divey working-class feel of the place. Evidently the idea is to keep it a bit rough around the edges, but some “improvements” will be made. What these improvements will be, or if indeed they are improvements remains to be seen. My vote, if I were to change anything, is to get rid of one of the tables down by the bar to give that pool table a little more room. Wonky as it is, it remains one of my favorite pool tables in town.

In any event I will continue to frequent the Comet and chew the fat with their friendly bartenders. Truly a Capitol Hill landmark. Let’s hope for the best!

I always make a trek into the beloved Comet when I’m in town. My first visit was during the day, about 1 p.m. I witnessed a construction worker come in and order a glass of zinfindel. Which is laughable, since it’s the Comet.

So the bartender pours the wine in a small glass and serves it. The guy starts arguring with the bartender and demands a wine glass. The Comet doesn’t have wine glasses. It’s the Comet. Thus, an argument ensues and the man begins to trash the Comet for their lack of proper barware. I was hoping for some serious fisticuffs but the guy just walked away and bitched.

Mere moments a guy sat down at the bar and began yelling about how much he hated Seattle.

I love the Comet. Take good care of your bartender.

Friendly bartenders with eclectic tastes in music. One of the best damn dives in Seattle. Bunch of working class regulars, and two crappy pool tables that are a joy to play on once you learn the table roll. The bar-level table can be more like playing golf, given the wall hazard, post hazard, and regulars at the end of the bar hazard.

Also just a great place to decompress after work over a couple of pints and a good book.

I had a great fake ID from AK and The Comet was my first bar when I moved to Seattle. By the time my 21st birthday rolled around getting tanked was almost boring—I have many smoky nights at The Comet to thank for that.
