• Introduction to Rockland by FROMMER'S November 20, 2006 On the southwest edge of Penobscot Bay, Rockland has long been proud of its brick-and-blue-collar waterfront reputation. Built around the fishing industry, Rockland historically dabbled in tourism on the side, but with the decline of fisheries and the rise of Maine's tourist economy, the balance has shifted. In the last decade, Rockland has been colonized by creative restaurateurs, innkeepers, and other small-business folks who paint it with an unaccustomed gloss. The waterfront boasts a small park, from which windjammers come and go, but more appealing than Rockland's waterfront is its commercial downtown -- it's basically one long street lined with sophisticated historic brick architecture. If you're seeking picturesque harbor towns, head to Camden, Rockport, Port Clyde, or Stonington; but Rockland makes a great base for exploring this beautiful coastal region, especially if you like your towns a bit rough around the edges.
