Worth visiting!
years ago
i discovered that within the park and beach are the remnants of an old fort, Fort Miles. submarine spotting was an important part of the US defense of the Atlantic coast during WWII. Cape Henlopen has quite a few submarine spotting towers and embankments. It guards the mouth of the Delaware River, I live very close to the source of the Delaware.
back then, i took a series of dark and foreboding large format images that ended up as platinum prints. i’m going back down there in a few days. with a little bit of luck i’ll find something good again.

Cape Henlopen, Circa 1999
I first went were with my father and sister. It was the farthest point on a trip taken on bicycle, and when we got there, we loved it so much that we stayed for weeks. It was the hardest place to leave, and it was such a contrast to Princeton, NJ. I loved every minute of being there, and leaving made me sad.

The first time I went to this place
Cape Henlopen was my first time at a Delaware State beach. I went with my boyfriend at the beginning of this summer – we live in Pennsville, NJ which is right across the Delaware River from New Castle, DE. So we figured we’d go to the beaches in DE this summer rather than the stinky, crowded Jersey Shore. I’m glad we did – it reminded me of the Outer Banks in NC. If you want a boardwalk, go to Wildwood, Ocean City, or Atlantic City. If you want a relaxing, quiet day at the beach, check out Delaware!
