Worth visiting!

Absolutely taken aback. Beautiful city- so much to do, so much art to appreciate- and displayed so thoroughly through the outset of the entire city! Great place!

Worth visiting!

Don’t go in the winter because it is extremely cold and the wind will literally kill you. Fall is a nice time to visit. I attended graduate school at the University of Iowa. Although I was not very fond of the program I was in, I enjoyed Iowa City because it was almost like being in a New England small town but it was in the heart land.

Discussion: Mexican Food in Iowa City  — 1 year ago

Talk amongst yourselves (someday, when more people join this group). What’s the best Mexican joint in the IC area?

We’ve tried: Iguana’s (Hills and N. Liberty), El Dorado (C-ville), Cancun (C-ville), Diamond Dave’s (both IC locations), Carlos O’Kelly’s, and Los Portales.

Our picks of the litter are Cancun, Los Portales, and Diamond Dave’s (although none are what we would call amazing… but we’re from the southwest and are picky). My personal preference is Los Portales because the food is relatively spicy and the tortillas are fresh. Brian likes Los P. better but beware Saturday nights (a very loud mariachi band right by your ear) and the semi-aggressive HOLA AMIGOS atmosphere… and Diamond Dave’s has pretty lame atmosphere but their enchiladas are pretty good. Iguana’s gets an ok rating, and everything else gets a YUCK (esp. Carlos O’Kelly’s where they serve TOSTITOSCOME ON!!!!).

Recommendation: House of Lords  — 1 year ago

We ate at the House of Lords tonight (on 1st in Coralville). Yes, it’s a faux Tudor-style restaurant attached to a Best Western. But if you can handle the tongue-in-cheekiness of it, it’s actually quite nice.

It features a pretty elegant menu specializing in prime rib and sea food. The appetizers are a good entree option for the more money-impaired. Brian ate the pork sandwich (very good) and I had the scampi (excellent). The bar features a wide variety of, y’know, BOOZE, and there’s even a window to the pool above it (a little disconcerting but can be very funny). The music was great, the light low, and overall it was a pleasant, intimate atmosphere great for dining or drinking. Not a sport in sight.

Worth visiting!

I left Iowa years ago and I kind of miss Iowa City. It’s the only place in Iowa where you can find a little culture, diversity, and a few good restaurants.

Worth visiting!

My exboyfriend goes to Univ. of Iowa and I stayed in this lovely inn that had airplane themes. I was in the Amelia Earhart Suite and it was nice and quaint. Great college town.
