My birthday tradition
This was the first place I ever had sushi, something like ten years ago. I went with one of my friends and her mom’s boyfriend, who was an architect. For the longest time there was no one else in my life who enjoyed sushi, so the only way I could ever talk my parents into taking me was to choose Miyako for my birthday dinner.
I’ve had quite a few birthday dinners at this place, and it’s kind of grown with me. I started with California and Philadelphia maik, and as I’ve gotten older and more adventurous, I’ve moved on to caterpillar (eel and avocado) and spicy tuna maki. The year before last I tried New Orleans maki, a beautiful fusion of Louisiana and Japan – crawfish, pepper crusted tuna and avocado.
Tonight I’m planning on stepping up and ordering some nigiri.
