It took me about 6 months in NYC before I discovered the V train could take me straight to NYU from the G train, to save me the walk from union square if I took the L. This was a great find in winter, when a couple of blocks meant the difference between a face full of mucous and tears (from the cold), or just being uncomfortably cold.
I took the F train to coney island, that was a fun adventure, I like the above-ground trains.
The B and the D trains are great for that local-to-express-leaping that you do when local and express trains run next to each other. Really makes you feel alive!
Pluses: local-to-express-leap, above ground part of F, V train drops you off right outside Joe’s pizza (as does anything at the west 4 but still!).
Minuses: V doesn’t run at late nights or on weekends, or on public holidays when your professor still holds the class so you forget it is a public holiday and get stuck and have to take 4 trains to get to class instead of 2!
