By car all you need is a good map – but it would be interesting to see haw much of the old coast road is left.
We went by bus; not as straightforward as it sounds because the timetable sold by the Tourist office at Funchal wasn’t up to date. I advise checking at the Noroeste bus-stop.
We met people who had first done the round trip ten or so years back and how it’s changed! An hour has been knocked off a four hour journey getting there and goodness knows how much on the way back – BUT tunnels aren’t noted for their scenery. For all that it’s very well worth doing.
