It’s the site of the only clue left behind by notorious serial killer ‘Jack the Ripper’ in 1888.
In the doorway next to what is now the ‘Happy Days’ Fish & Chip restaurant, was found a torn piece of Catharine Eddowes apron. She had been murdered in the early hours of 30th September 1888 in Mitre Square.
On the wall in the doorway was some chalked grafitti that read ‘The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing’. The meaning of this message has been puzzled over for over 118 years.
