stereotypical Maple Leaf by DJStroky

Well, this is my first venture in my quest to visit a new church each week. And what better way to start than going to the closest possible church to my home.

I pretty much found what I expected over here at Faith Lutheran: nice people, mostly married and a bunch of grandparents. As always in Maple Leaf, the people are all really friendly and well-to-do.

The church from the outside is beautiful with all kinds of plants and trees. Inside it’s normal I guess for a church – really high ceilings, wooden pews, and the obligatory cross hanging on the wall behind the stage.

Everyone was given an 8-page pamphlet where we basically went over every single item in there throughout the service. There was signing, and quite a few responsive readings. The sermon was titled “Faith to Go Out with Good Courage” and covered the story of Abraham moving from Babylon to Canaan, Paul’s account of this in Romans and also threw in the bit about Matthew the tax collector too. The pastor I thought didn’t deliver the sermon with that much excitement or intellectual depth, but perhaps it could’ve been that I just came on the day when they were doing a more traditional service.

For a church of this size (I’d guess about 250 members) the extracurricular activities they had going on were pretty good. They mentioned something about having a missionary trip to Africa pretty soon, a summer camp for kids, and regular bible studies.

My overall impression was that this was a nice little neighborhood church, and although I thought the sermon wasn’t terribly fascinating, I’m sure that the good company of the church members would make up for this and more through the extracurricular activities where people are really able to get to know one another and the Lord.
