Auvers-sur-Oise

This is where Van Gogh lived for the last few months of his life and it’s so easy to reconcile his paintings with what you see in front of you when walking through the town and countryside. I happened to visit on the only day that his house was closed, which was really annoying but that also meant that there weren’t many tourists about. If you visit the church, instead of walking back to town, keep going uphill past it to the graveyard where Van Gogh and his brother are buried (in a very simple grave). You can walk back to town through the wheatfields and woods, which are absolutely beautiful in summer.
