family tradition by valsee

I was born in Las Cruces, NM, but both sides of my family, mother and father were from Mesilla, NM, about a 5 minute drive from Las Cruces. I spent most family occassions in Mesilla and lived there for a year while in college at New Mexico State University. I was baptized, had my first holy communion, was confirmed and married in San Albino Church in the plaza of Mesilla. My parents were married there, as were my grandparents. If you are visting Mesilla or Las Cruces, the plaza is a wonderful place to visit during the day or evening, especially at Christmas as the plaza is lit with thousands of luminarios. The Double Eagle restaurant is a nice restaurant and obviously riddled with history. Area restaurants include Andele’s, Mariachis’ and of course, world-famous, La Posta. Having moved all about the country and visited a few places around the world I can honestly say the food is unique to this area and you’ll never find anything like it anywhere else, period. Its fantastic, rich in flavor and I sorely miss it everywhere we move. My brother while in college performed with Mariachi Rayos del Sol, which performed often in the plaza with many ballet folklorico groups, definetely a sight to see every Cinco de Mayo and Dies-y-sies de Septiembre, May 5th and Sept 16th.
