Liparì

Even for the short time I was able to get on the island, it was worth the cost of the trip in a hydrofoil [aliscafo] several times over. Both aliscafi [fast but restricted movement and boring] and ships [slow but free to wander] go from Milazzo on the Sicilian mainland.
There is a very good museum of Greek and Roman antiquities about a quarter of an hour from the harbour and a bus round the coast in both directions. I gather it’s easy to walk the stretch between the two termini. However I couldn’t manage long enough for more than the museum, which is why I want to go back. Great scenery.
The name Lipari applies both to the island and its main town and port.
