Grímsvötn

Just read about some people that went here in July and didn’t figure that maybe the ice over the lake could be a little thin around that time and plomps! down they went, one more sacrifice to the mountain. I think the people them selfs got rescued in the end though.

Went on a fly-by of the eruption of 1996, was pretty cool, as these things are of course quite crazy.. The column reaches kilometers up into the sky and effects the whole globe. There is a crazy roar from the earth and in the dark column you can see lightning striking between the different particles. When there’s an eruption at Grímsvötn some quite big floods also follow as the glacier melts. After the eruption in 1996 there were scores huge icebergs lying around the southern plain for a whole year. Many quite a lot bigger than houses.

Seeing the rushing floods and the massive column in the distance from the ground is impressive enough! Seeing it from the air was great.
